Dryer Drum Not Turning in Harbor City

Harbor City, CA

Motor running, drum standing still: this Harbor City dryer had a broken drum belt. We replaced the belt, and the dryer works normally again.

What was going wrong

When the dryer was switched on, its motor ran but the drum did not rotate. A drum that does not turn cannot tumble the load, so the dryer could not do its job.

What we found

We found that the drum belt was broken.

Why that explains the symptom: in a typical belt-driven household dryer, a long belt wraps around the outside of the drum and around a pulley driven by the motor. The motor turns the pulley, and the belt turns the drum. Once the belt breaks, nothing carries the motor's motion to the drum, so the motor can keep running while the drum stays still, which is exactly what was reported here.

How we fixed it

We replaced the broken drum belt. With the new belt in place, the dryer returned to normal operation and the motor turns the drum again.
